“20 years ago I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. Prior to this, I was very healthy except for well-controlled asthma. Intensive treatment for the CML enabled remission but it has left me with persistent and recurrent respiratory infections due to my now compromised immune system.

Around 15 years ago I was given an electronic “Pnuemeter” by Dr Donald Butler that measures FEV1 as well as peak flow. FEV1 has been especially useful as it enables me to monitor closely my lung function. With any exacerbation of my lung condition, I can monitor its severity as soon as I become aware of mild symptoms. When I see my respiratory physician for regular review I usually have comprehensive lung function testing done at the same time.

However, having a way to monitor my condition early and repeatedly has greatly helped with management. I have been able to start intervention early for my lung condition prior to it getting worse and so much harder to treat. I kept records of all the readings until late last year when I disposed of them due to a major home cleanout.

I work as a senior midwife at Norwest private hospital in Sydney’s west. I am still able to work full time. The ability to closely monitor my lung function has greatly contributed to staying healthy and continue working doing the job I love.”
